Most of my recent pieces concern themselves with the idea of timbral articulation: the colouring-in of a given material — usually a melodic line — by the use of different timbres, produced by an array of different playing techniques. In 4 Abbilder [4 Images], the used timbres are different gradations of commonly used string playing techniques, for example different degrees of bow pressure, which bring out a variety of shades between noise and pitch. Around a central melody, these values are used to create small grayscale sketches, each focusing on a different family of sounds — and each with their melodic subject floating in the background, sometimes overtly, sometimes just as a faint reminiscence.
