Beast Calls: Susi Spinus is part of a series of works that is inspired by recordings I have made of animals, in this case siskins, which are birds from the Spinus genus. The instrumental part showcases the new sound possibilities offered by the Helder Tenor recorder, which Susanne Fröhlich, for whom the piece is written, has been developing. These include a number of complex timbres as well as varieties of tone that do not exist on traditional recorders. The electronics consist of the recordings of siskins as well as transformations of recordings of Susanne's improvisations that bridge the sound of the recorder and the aviary.
