As the title suggests, Three Rivers is a piece with three movements. The first involves quite a vast range of instruments but focusses on the tones and resonances rather than the rhythmic elements. The second movement forms the central part of the work and adds the rhythmic aspect to the colour textures. The third movement follows on from the second, creating a symmetrical work with the first movement. During the piece, the four musicians recite in French the poem Moonlit Night on the River by Chinese poet Li Po (701-762).
