In 1940, John Cage had no percussions to accompany a ballet: he then had the idea to riddle his piano with screws, gums and papers that turned the tempered instrument into a miniature and microtonal orchestra, made for noise music and sounding like a gamelan. Seven contemporary compositors pay tribute to John Cage by using the same piano preparation in their creations.
